OPENING SESSION

"Learning to Disagree"

John Inazu, Sally D. Danforth Distinguished Professor of Law & Religion and Professor of Political Science, Washington University
Suzanne Davis, President, Greenville University

Americans today—including Christians and other people of faith—are not very good at disagreement. We demonize our adversaries, praise ourselves, and talk past one another. Increasingly, these same patterns have taken root in our colleges and universities through shallow discourse, unchecked activism, and ambiguity around the core educational mission. But higher education can, at its best, equip students with the tools and dispositions for addressing conflict and engaging charitably across disagreement. In this dialogue, John Inazu and Suzanne Davis talk about his latest book, which draws from his curricular and extracurricular experiences teaching law students to suggest ways toward better thinking, greater empathy, and more patient engagement across difference.
