Initiative grants Application Information:

Each application shall consist of a three page pverview plus a narrative.

Page 1:
Cover page specifying project title; names, positions and institutional affiliations of participants; and Project Director, with contact information (all grant-related correspondence will be directed to the Project Director).

Page 2:
A proposal abstract (maximum of 400 words, single spaced) summarizing the focus, significance and approach of the proposed research.

Page 3:

Two lists, with the first containing the description, timeframe and costs of each grant-supported activity; and the second an enumeration of specific outcomes to which the proposed research is directed (e.g., an edited volume, conference(s), submission of proposal for major funding).

The project narrative (maximum of nine double-spaced pages) shall include the following:
      • A statement on the proposed theme for research, including an indication of how the research will be informed by a Christian perspective.
      • A preliminary plan for individual or collaborative research by team members on topics related to the theme, with reference to how the proposed research is related to existing literature on these topics.
      • A summary of previous research by team members related to their proposed topics for research.
      • A plan for dissemination of the resulting research to the scholarly community, including a description of the ways in which a Christian perspective will be explicit or implicit in such dissemination
      • A proposal for activities to be funded by the grant over the three-year grant period, with a cost breakdown for each activity and a rationale for the proposed distribution of funds.
      • A bibliography of works cited in the narrative.
In addition to the overview and narrative, each proposal shall include:
      • A curriculum vita for each member of the proposed research team, with a maximum length of five pages per vita (including those activities and publications judged to be most pertinent to the proposed project).
      • Letters of reference from two scholars with recognized expertise relative to the proposed theme, attesting to the value of the project and the competency of the team. Letters should be mailed directly to the Program Office and must arrive by February 16, 2009.
      • In cases where the home institution of team members is providing collateral support, such as release time from teaching or appointment of a student research assistant, letters of support from appropriate academic officers at the home institution must be mailed to the Program Office no later than February 16, 2009.
All requested materials must be received by February 16, 2009. Please mail an original and seven stapled photocopies to the Program Office.  The following will not be accepted: faxed materials; electronic applications; late applications; incomplete applications; applications that exceed the stipulation for maximum number of pages.
 
Awards will be announced by April 15, 2009.  The schedule of grant payments will be as follows:
      • $9,000 by May 15, 2009, after completion of a grant agreement form.
      • $5,000 by May 15, 2010, after receipt of a satisfactory first-year progress report.
      • $3,000 by May 15, 2011, after receipt of a satisfactory second-year progress report.
      • $1,000 by May 15, 2012, after receipt of a satisfactory final project report.
Funds will be sent to the Business Office of the home institution of the Project Director, and that institution shall serve as the fiscal agent during the three-year term of the grant (with responsibilities indicated in a grant agreement).
