The CCCU has recently accepted a proposal from Indiana Wesleyan University to establish a Research Center in Adult Learning for the benefit of CCCU member campuses. IWU will work collaboratively with the CCCU to appoint a steering committee representing the constituents in the CCCU. This steering committee, along with the CCCU vice president for professional development & research, will assist the Center director in identifying research topics, resources and expertise.

“The Research Center in Adult Learning brings together excellent professional expertise  which currently exists in adult education programs among the CCCU members,” says Mike Bonner, Vice President for Adult and Graduate Studies at Indiana Wesleyan University.” The Center will utilize these resources in a cohesive, formalized approach to finding and disseminating new knowledge in adult learning.”

The proposed research agenda, which will be established by the steering committee, may include topics such as:

• Development of norms for adult student learning outcomes allowing for performance benchmarks for adult degree programs.
• Studies of best practices for on-site higher education for adults.
• Studies of best practices for online education with adults.
• Warehousing financial data from CCCU adult programs so colleges may benchmark their return on investment.
• Developing and conducting national surveys and other research projects regarding adult education, including:

• Entrance surveys
• Student satisfaction surveys
• Student learning outcomes
• Online learning outcomes
• Faculty behavior and impact on learning of adults (online and onsite)
• Other projects as requested by members

CCCU campuses which become participating members of the Research Center would enjoy benefits including: the opportunity to offer input into the research agenda; access to research findings; an extra resource for help with unique institutional questions regarding  adult learning; and the opportunity to attend periodic conferences focused on adult education.

In the development of specific administrative and governance policies for the Center, IWU will collaborate and cooperate with the CCCU. IWU is providing staffing, space and support services for the Center. Watch www.cccu.org for more information as it becomes available.
