July 8, 2008
ST. PAUL, Minn.—Twenty-seven faculty from CCCU campuses across the country joined in St. Paul, Minn., June 3-6, 2008, for the National New Faculty Workshop. The event was hosted by Bethel University (MN).

“Dr. Deb Sullivan-Trainor and the staff team at Bethel University did an outstanding job putting together the 2008 New Faculty Workshop and a masterful job at managing the logistics for the attendees,” says CCCU Director of Conference Operations Billie Robinson. “With informed and relevant topics and expert keynote speakers this year’s workshop will prove to be beneficial for the attendees for years to come.”

The keynote speaker for the opening banquet was CCCU Vice President for Professional Development & Research Ron Mahurin, who is currently transitioning to his new role as academic vice president and dean of Houghton College (NY).

The National New Faculty Workshop was facilitated and primarily led by Bethel University and featured the following sessions:
  • Integration of Faith and Learning: Definitions and Approaches: Neil and Virginia Lettinga, chaplains and faculty University of Northern British Columbia
  • Integrating our Faith and Scholarship: Dan Ritchie, professor of English; Carole Young, professor of psychology
  • Integrating our Faith and Teaching: Teresa DeGolier, professor of biology; Kathy Nevins, professor of psychology and teaching mentor
  • Integrating our Faith and Service: Louise Wilson, associate professor of education; Tom Johnson, associate professor of  business
  • Integrating our Faith when working with Today’s Students: Sam Mulberry, instructor of history and faculty development specialist;  Jeff Sanders, associate dean for relationship education
  • Integrating our Faith by being Reconcilers: Leon Rodrigues, chief diversity officer; Kathy McGillvray, director of disability services
  • Integrating our Faith by being in Community: Ken Rohly, professor of chemistry; Barrett Fisher, professor of English, associate dean of arts and humanities
  • Integrating our Faith, our Work, and our Personal Life: Stacey Hunter Hecht, associate professor of political science; Joel Frederickson, professor of psychology, assistant dean of assessment
“I was struck by the diversity among the new faculty,” says Dave Claborn, assistant professor of political science & history, Olivet Nazarene University (IL). “I went thinking the integration of faith and teaching was the gist of the conference, but others were thinking of the integration of faith and scholarship, or faith and service.  I had limited faith quite a bit, and it was great to get a glimpse of just how transformative God can be.  And I talked with others who had a similar experience.”
