Jessica Buchanan, one of two aid workers rescued from Somali pirates by U.S. Navy SEAL Team 6 early Wednesday morning East Africa Time, is a 2007 graduate of Valley Forge Christian College. The school, located in Phoenixville, Pa., is one of the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities affiliate campuses.
Buchanan and her Danish coworker Poul Hagen Thisted were working for a Danish relief organization in northern Somalia when they were kidnapped last October. Buchanan reportedly felt called to Africa as a Christian missionary after spending one of her college semesters in Nairobi, Kenya, as a student teacher. She has worked in Kenya and Somalia for the past five years.
In a Valley Forge Christian College press release, Dr. Don Meyer, President of VFCC exclaimed, “We are all rejoicing in the wonderful news about Jessica Buchanan’s release. We have Jessica in our thoughts and prayers, and give thanks to all of those that have been keeping her and her family in prayer. She will soon be reunited with her family and there couldn’t be a greater blessing.”
