Symposium on Spiritual Formation Scheduled for June 2010

March 17, 2010
LANGLEY, British ColumbiaOn June 24-26, 2010, with assistance from the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, the Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) will convene a symposium at Trinity Western University in British Columbia designed to ask and answer what defines spiritual formation and how that vision is implemented holistically by the full spectrum of personnel responsible for realizing it on a CCCU campus.

The CCCU recognizes that a compelling issue facing our members today and into the foreseeable future is that of the right to hire. The right is based on a religious exemption related to the uniquely Christian nature of the education our members providetransforming lives by faithfully relating scholarship and service to biblical truth. Accordingly, the CCCU recognizes that we will need to be able to define such transformation so that we can assess it and demonstrate that we are meeting our mission.

This symposium is offered as a first step in that direction. It is open to up to ten campus teams of four to six, which are led by the campus president (a requirement). With the support of the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust, the CCCU will be able to cover the costs of attendees lodging, on site meals, and conference registration fees. The grant requires matching funds from participating campuses which will require each campus team to be responsible for travel costs to the conference and any additional incidental expenses.

The group will convene for two days of workshops to unpack what practices make for a holistic experience of spiritual formation throughout the undergraduate experience. Ultimately, the group would be called upon to answer the questions:
  1. What is the essence of spiritual formation?
  2. What are the core definitional aspects?
  3. What are we nurturing through spiritual formation?
  4. What steps (programs and program activities) do our campuses take to spiritually form students?
