CCCU joins American Council on Education comments to Department of Education

September 14, 2010
The CCCU joined over 50 higher education and accrediting organizations as a signatory to the September 9, 2010, comments offered by the American Council on Education (ACE) to the July 26, 2010 Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) published by the Department of Education entitled Program Integrity: Gainful Employment. The stated purpose of the NPRM is to address concerns about students enrolling in job training programs and assuming more debt than their future career will enable them to repay either because the cost of the program is too high related to the amount of income the program prepares participants to earn, or because the program is academically insufficient to prepare participants for employability.

While the comments commended the Department of Education for endeavoring to protect students and taxpayers, the comments described the unforeseen impact of the proposed regulations on public and nonprofit institutions and suggested revisions that could eliminate or reduce these effects.

The deadline for comments was Thursday, September 9, 2010. The Department of Education is expected to issue its final ruling November 1, 2010. The new rules will go into effect July 1, 2011.
