Ron Mahurin, CCCU's vice president for professional development and research, will be serving as a moderator fora session in the 2003 Collegium in Boston, Mass. on November 7 and 8. The theme of the symposium is "Conversations on International Public Policy," and it is sponsored by the Center for Christian Studies at Gordon College. Mahurin will moderate the session entitled "The Middle East: How to Heal Tensions."
Several sessions will be held at the historic Faneuil Hall, a meeting place of monumental anti-slavery and women's sufferage rallies in the 1840s and 50s.Part of Boston's Freedom Trail, the Hall is still used as a meeting space for public debates such as this.
Collegium program coordinator, Deb Drost, said Mahurin was selected as a moderator because of his ability to relate to diverse groups of people. He recently visited a CCCU student program in Egypt, giving him valuable insight into regional concerns. Mahurin will enrich the session by successfully balancing sensitivity and a healthy sense of humor.
The stated goal of the collegium is to "model respectful conversation between those holding different theistic perspectives on important contemporary issues." Other sessions include weighty topics such as "Normative Principles and International Politics: Is Justice Possible?", "Global Environment Policy and Global Warming:How to Heal our Planet", and "Reparations for Slavery and its Aftermath: A Just Solution?".
Collegium sponsors look forward to opening dialogue with some of Boston metro area's 300,000 diverse college students.
