HERS Institute

The HERS, Bryn Mawr Summer Institute for Women in HigherEducation Administration, sponsored by Higher Education ResourcesServices (HERS), Mid-America, cosponsored and hosted by Bryn MawrCollege (PA).

Begun in 1976, The HERS, Bryn Mawr Summer Institute four-weekresidential program focuses on improving the status of women in themiddle and executive levels of higher education administration. Theprogram focuses on four major areas, including:

  • Academic Environment - strategic planning in shaping mission and new initiatives; undergraduate learning and teaching; faculty development.
  • External Environment - focuses on political, social and economic trends; financial conditions impacting institutions; and the media.
  • Institutional Environment - introduces financial and accounting processes; budgeting techniques and politics; hiring and firing.
  • Professional Development - focuses on leadership skills, public speaking and self-presentation; strategies for institutional change; professional networks; and wellness.

One objective of the HERS, Bryn Mawr Summer Institute is tofoster a network of peers and mentors who provide information,resources, contacts and support.

The upcoming Institute will be held from June 23-July 19, 2002.The application deadline for the Summer 2002 Institute is March 1,2002. Applications must be submitted to the CCCU offices forreview.

Approved applications will then be submitted to HERS. Admissionis open to women faculty and college/university administratorswhose background, experience and present responsibilities indicatea potential for professional advancement in higher educationadministration. Applications are encouraged from women in themiddle and executive levels of higher education administrationwithin the CCCU member and affiliate institutions.

Total cost is $6,000 (including housing and meals) of which$5,000 will be covered by a CCCU scholarship. A total of sixscholarships will be offered for CCCU women to attend Institutes in2002. Participants reside on the Bryn Mawr campus, twenty minutesfrom the center of historic Philadelphia. Participants are expectedto be in residence for the entire length of the program.
