Cynthia Toms Smedley
serves as the Director of Educational Immersions at the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Social Concerns. She directs academic seminars that utilize community engagement and experiential learning to examine social justice issues from an interdisciplinary perspective. Prior to this position, Cynthia held a teaching post at Eastern Mennonite University, taught cross-cultural immersion skills at Peking University in Beijing, China, and was the assistant director of the Uganda Studies Program located in Mukono, Uganda. She recieved her BS from Messiah College and her master's degree from Boston University and is currently pursuing a PhD in Higher Education. Her dissertation research focuses on the impact of international service learning on developing communities. She is co-editor of the recent book,
Transformations at the Edge of the World: Forming Global Christians through the Study Abroad Experience
. Cynthia resides with her husband Michael and two sons in South Bend, Indiana.
